Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has condemned the arrest of Mukurweini MP John Kaguchia, accusing President William Ruto’s administration of selectively applying the law against opposition politicians.
In a statement shared on X on Monday, Kalonzo said while he does not support incitement, the law should be enforced equally regardless of a person’s political affiliation.
“I strongly condemn the arbitrary arrest of Mukurweini MP, Hon. John Kaguchia, over his public remarks,” Kalonzo said.
The former Vice President maintained that every leader has a responsibility to uphold peace and respect the rule of law.
“Let me be clear: we do not support incitement, from anyone. Every leader has a duty to protect peace and to respect the rule of law,” he said.
Kalonzo, however, questioned what he described as the government’s selective enforcement of the law.
“The Constitution guarantees every Kenyan freedom of expression. The law must be applied fairly, not selectively,” he added.
The Wiper leader claimed that other leaders who made controversial remarks in the past were never held accountable.
“Mr. Ruto’s regime said ‘shoot and kill’ against our own children. No action followed. The UDA Secretary General and a sitting Cabinet Secretary hurled tribal insults, one going so far as to call an entire community ‘hyenas.’ Again, no action,” he said.
He questioned why Kaguchia had been arrested while others facing similar accusations had not.
“Why the double standard?” Kalonzo posed.
He insisted that justice should not depend on whether a person supports the government or belongs to the opposition.
“If incitement is the standard, apply it to everyone; Mukurweini MP or Cabinet Secretary, it does not matter. Selective justice is not justice. It has no place in our democracy,” he said.
Kaguchia was arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Monday morning, hours after spending the night at Royal Media Services, where he claimed police officers were waiting to arrest him following a television interview.
By the time of publication, the DCI had not publicly disclosed the specific offence or offences the MP is facing.
