Kenyan trumpeter MacKinlay Mutsembi has successfully completed a 24-hour trumpet-playing marathon, paving the way for a potential Guinness World Record.
The marathon began on Friday at Nairobi’s Geco Café and wrapped up on Saturday at 10:00 p.m.
Mutsembi, a celebrated musician and music producer known as “Africa’s Trumpeter,” set out to break boundaries of artistic endurance with this ambitious challenge.
As the founder and director of the Nairobi Horns Project, Afrolect Jazz, and Afrolect Academy, Mutsembi has long been a trailblazer in the music scene.
Drawing inspiration from marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge’s mantra, “No human is limited,” he aimed to inspire other creatives to push their limits.
Born in Nairobi and raised in Mombasa, Mutsembi eventually returned to Nairobi, where he built a successful career in music.
He holds a Master’s in Business Administration and is an alumnus of both the University of Nairobi and the Afrolect International Jazz Fest.
Throughout the 24-hour performance, Mutsembi was joined on stage by various musicians and bands, performing six distinct sets that spanned genres including jazz, Afro-jazz, R&B, pop, soul, jazz fusion, and chill ballads.
The marathon performance celebrated the richness of Kenyan music and captured the attention of Nairobi’s music lovers, who supported his quest for a Guinness World Record.
