Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has voiced his dissatisfaction with the balls used in England’s domestic cup competitions, particularly the Mitre balls used in the FA Cup.

Guardiola expressed frustration, saying, “The ball in the Champions League is exceptional, the ball in the Premier League is exceptional, this one isn’t. It’s difficult to control.”

His comments come after a similar outburst from Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta earlier this season, who was mocked after criticizing the ball used in the Carabao Cup following a defeat to Newcastle in the semi-finals.

City won 3-1 against Championship side Plymouth in the FA Cup on Saturday, but they had 20 shots off target during the match.

“You know how many shots went over? Look at other games. Normally, the ball goes in from these shots,” Guardiola added.

The Premier League uses Nike balls, while Adidas balls are used in UEFA European competitions and Puma balls in the EFL Cup.

Manchester City celebrates win over Plymouth in FA Cup but they had 20 shots off target.

In response, a Football Association spokesperson defended the Mitre Ultimax Pro ball, stating, “Mitre’s Ultimax Pro ball—used in the Emirates FA Cup and all other FA competitions—has been tested in accordance with FIFA standards. All footballs in professional competitions must meet FIFA Quality Pro accreditation, and this ball meets all testing requirements. We understand that preference is subjective, but we are confident in the ball’s performance. With over 350 goals scored in the knockout stages of the competition, it continues to provide an exciting element to such a competitive tournament.”

City’s three goals in the FA Cup tie came from 29 shots, of which nine were on target.
