Gor Mahia fans stormed the pitch and damaged the trophy presentation podium at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday after their team suffered a 3-1 defeat to Tusker FC in the FKF Super Cup.
The ugly scenes came shortly after the final whistle, with police deploying tear gas to disperse supporters as chaos spread inside the stadium.
The incident overshadowed what was expected to be a colourful start to the new football season, with Tusker celebrating their victory and preparing to lift the season-opening trophy.
The FKF Super Cup pits the FKF Premier League champions against the FKF Cup winners. Gor Mahia entered Sunday’s contest as league champions, while Tusker qualified after winning the FKF Cup last season.
Tusker took control of the match in the first half, with Francis Oduor opening the scoring before Eugene Ikutwa doubled the advantage two minutes later.
Gor Mahia pulled one back before the break when Ikutwa inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.
Ian Simiyu restored Tusker’s two-goal lead early in the second half, securing a 3-1 victory for the Brewers and their first silverware of the 2026/27 season.
The defeat appeared to frustrate sections of the Gor Mahia support, with some fans invading the pitch after the match and destroying parts of the presentation area.
The disorder also disrupted Tusker’s trophy celebrations as security officers moved in to contain the situation.
Football Kenya Federation has since launched an investigation into the incidents and condemned the violence, destruction of property and behaviour that put players, officials, journalists, security officers and other fans at risk.
“There is no place for violence, destruction of property, intimidation or any conduct that puts the safety of players, journalists, officials, fans, security personnel and the public at risk,” FKF said.
The federation said it would review match footage and reports from officials and other stakeholders before determining those responsible.
FKF also said anyone found to have breached its regulations or Kenyan law would face appropriate action, whether a supporter, club official, steward or security officer.
For Tusker, the victory provided an early statement of intent after they defeated the reigning league champions to claim the Super Cup.
For Gor Mahia, however, the result leaves the club with questions to answer both on the pitch and over the conduct of a section of its supporters as the new season gets underway.
