The Government is making its final preparations to set up the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit, a new security team that will be tasked with ensuring safety, maintaining public order, and possibly, handling emerging security threats collectively throughout Nairobi and its environs.

After receiving an update from the technical committee lead by the initiative, Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said that the Unit as one of the aims will be instrumental in transforming policing operations in the capital city.

The new metropolitan policing set-up aims to boost security agencies’ coordination, improving rapid reaction capabilities, and establishing trustful relations and cooperation between law enforcement officers and the general public.

According to Murkomen, the technical committee is drawing inspirations from some of the world’s leading metropolitan police services as they work on the Unit’s organisational structure, service standing orders, and standard operating procedures.

The CS also noted that though an ambitious project, the Government is confident that the specialised Unit, by combining efforts and resources, can offer a more effective and harmonious solution to urban security issues such as crime prevention, crowd control, and disaster management.

The meeting where the report was delivered was also graced by Ahmed Abdisalan, Douglas Kanja, members of Nairobi City County Government, and other senior Government officials.
