Egerton University has introduced a new online portal that allows parents, guardians and sponsors to monitor students’ academic progress, fee balances and accommodation details without having to visit the campus.
The Parents Portal is designed to give families direct access to information about their students, providing an alternative to relying on phone calls, physical meetings or waiting for official reporting periods.
The university announced the platform in a statement on August 19, saying it would give parents and guardians a greater role in following their students’ academic journey.
“The Parents Portal is an exciting opportunity for parents/guardians/sponsors to become more involved in their student(s)’ academic progress,’’ the university stated.
Once registered, users can access a student’s profile, including their registration number, academic programme and other general information held by the university.
The portal also provides access to fee information, allowing parents to see the amount payable for a particular semester or term. This could make it easier for families to keep track of their financial obligations and plan for upcoming payments.
Parents can view exam results
The platform also gives parents access to students’ examination results, although the university notes that the grades displayed are provisional.
This means parents can get an indication of how a student is performing before the release of official results.
For students living on campus, the portal provides accommodation details, including the hostel block, room and bed allocated for the semester.
The move comes amid concerns over cases where parents only discover problems with their children’s academic progress after significant delays.
There have also been reports of students presenting parents or guardians with falsified fee statements or information about retakes in order to obtain money, making direct access to university records potentially useful for families seeking to verify such information.
By providing parents with direct access to student information, Egerton University is seeking to strengthen communication between the institution, students and their families.
Registration requires identification details
The portal can be accessed using an internet-enabled smartphone, tablet or computer, allowing parents and sponsors to check the available information remotely.
To register, users require a valid email address and either a national identification card or passport number.
The university also allows more than one parent or guardian to register separately for the same student.
Parents and guardians can access the platform through the university’s dedicated Parents Portal at parents.egerton.ac.ke.
