Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has officially resigned from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, ending his association with President William Ruto’s political outfit.

Gachagua submitted his resignation letter to the party officials on Monday, May 12, 2025.

“It is my patriotic duty as a Kenyan, believing in the rule of law and millions of others who do so, in the sanctity of our constitution and respecting our forefathers and freedom fighters in the cause for our great nation, that I tender my resignation from the party," said Gachagua.

In the letter, the former second in command criticised the Kenya Kwanza government for supposedly abandoning the foundational promises of the UDA, which he said had failed to deliver on its economic, social, and political commitments to Kenyans.

He described the party’s leadership as inconsistent and accused it of betraying the people by not upholding the unity, stability, and prosperity it once championed.

Gachagua also announced plans to launch his political party, aiming to create a new platform that reflects his vision and counters the current government’s approach.

He has declared his intention to run for the presidency in the 2027 elections, asserting confidence in his ability to challenge President Ruto effectively.
