The Senate will on Wednesday begin debating the impeachment charges against Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo after approving changes to its calendar to accommodate morning sessions on Wednesday and Thursday, with extended afternoon sittings to ensure completion of the matter.

Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot called on Senators to take the proceedings seriously, noting that the allegations brought forward by the Nyamira County Assembly demand full attention.

He reminded colleagues of past occasions when the House sat until the early hours of the morning to address weighty national issues, urging them to be seated by 9 a.m. and dedicate the day to concluding the impeachment debate.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi is expected to outline the timelines for how both the County Assembly and Governor Nyaribo’s defense team will present their cases during the hearings.

Governor Nyaribo faces removal from office if at least 24 Senators find that the charges meet the constitutional threshold.

He was impeached by the Nyamira County Assembly on November 25 after 23 out of 31 MCAs supported the motion brought by Bonyamatuta Ward MCA Julius Kimwomi Matwere.

The motion accused him of abuse of office and violation of legal procedures, including conducting county business through unauthorized “Bunge Mashinani” sittings, irregularly approving funds to endorse Peris Nyaboke-Oroko as County Agriculture Minister, and making unlawful appointments in the county administration during a period described as marked by leadership instability.

The Senate’s final determination on the matter will decide whether Governor Nyaribo remains in office or is formally removed.
