President William Ruto and his immediate former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua came face to face on Wednesday during the requiem mass of the late Ol Kalou MP David Kiaraho in Nyandarua County.
The meeting, held at the proposed Nyandarua University grounds in the Captain area of Ol Kalou, unfolded in a sombre atmosphere but was marked by visible political undertones as the country edges closer to the 2027 General Election.
Gachagua, who arrived early to pay his respects, was accompanied by allies including Nyandarua Senator John Methu.
Tension briefly flared at the venue when security officers attempted to block Methu from accessing the main dais.
In a video that circulated widely online, officers are seen guiding the senator toward the platform as he signalled to his supporters to remain calm.
The situation was contained without disruption, with police maintaining order as mourners looked on.
The official programme notably excluded several opposition figures, among them Gachagua, raising questions over the handling of the event. Despite the omission, Gachagua attended the service.
Earlier, Methu had eulogised Kiaraho in the Senate, calling for unity among leaders- a message that contrasted with the standoff witnessed at the funeral.
Hundreds of residents attended the requiem mass, which proceeded without further incident. Family members, including the widow, delivered emotional tributes in honour of the late legislator.
