Impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has notably sidestepped a request from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for clarification regarding his claims of attempted assassination.
Instead of complying, Gachagua chose to attend a court hearing at Milimani Law Courts to contest his impeachment.
The DCI clarified that their letter was not a formal summons, but rather an invitation for Gachagua to provide details about his alarming allegations.
An official involved in the case stated, “This is not a summon but a move to have him clarify the claims he made.”
Gachagua arrived at the courthouse around 10:30 AM, prepared for proceedings before a three-judge panel.
Meanwhile, DCI officials expressed concerns that if Gachagua’s serious allegations remained unchallenged, they could gain traction and credibility. As a result, they sought his cooperation to help investigate the claims further.
The request for Gachagua to appear at DCI headquarters on October 22 was met with silence, as he opted instead to focus on his legal battle.
A team of detectives had been organized and was ready to take his statement, emphasizing that his input was essential for a thorough investigation.
Gachagua’s controversial claims surfaced shortly after he was discharged from Karen Hospital, where he was treated following his impeachment.
He alleged two separate attempts on his life—one on August 30 in Kisumu, where he claimed undercover police tried to poison his food, and another on September 3 in Nyeri involving officers from the National Intelligence Service (NIS).
“I don’t feel safe,” Gachagua declared during a press conference. “I was supposed to be killed through poisoning.” He also expressed concerns over the withdrawal of his security, which he said left him vulnerable.
The DCI reminded Gachagua of the serious nature of his allegations, which were reported publicly and cannot be dismissed lightly.
They had urged him to come in and provide a statement, highlighting the importance of his role in the investigation.
In a dramatic turn, Gachagua accused President William Ruto of betrayal, expressing disbelief that the man he once helped elevate to the presidency could turn against him.
“If anything happens to me or my family, President Ruto must be held to account,” he stated, further complicating the political landscape.
As of now, President Ruto has remained silent on both Gachagua’s impeachment and his recent allegations, leaving many to speculate about the implications of this unfolding drama within Kenya’s political arena.
