Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi has claimed that the controversial bill proposing an extension in the presidential term limit was drafted in Rigathi Gachagua’s office.
Wamumbi claimed the impeached Gachagua wanted to use the bill to sabotage President William Ruto’s government and paint it in bad light.
The lawmaker said Nandi senator Samson Cherargei was charged with sponsoring the bill to hide the fact that Gachagua was the one behind it.
"The truth. The bill by Senator Kiprotich Cherargei to extend the term limit of the president and other elected leaders from 5 years to 7 years was drafted by officers in the office of the Deputy President. The Chair of the committee that drafted the bill was the communication director in the office of the DP.
It was agreed that the bill must be moved by a Kalenjin Senator, and that is how Senator Cherargei was approached. This was one of the many schemes that made the government unpopular. It is their bill; they should carry their own cross," Wamumbi claimed.
Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill 2024 proposes term extensions for elected leaders, including the president, to seven years.
The bill also proposes the creation of a prime minister’s office and an increase in funds allocated to counties.
