A British soldier stationed at the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK) has been arrested over the alleged rape of a Kenyan woman near the Nanyuki military base.

The incident reportedly occurred last month after British soldiers visited a local bar. One soldier is accused of sexually assaulting a woman following the outing.

Kenyan police have questioned the suspect, and the UK Ministry of Defence confirmed the arrest, stating the Defence Serious Crime Unit is now handling the case. “Unacceptable and criminal behaviour has absolutely no place in our Armed Forces,” a spokesperson said.

The arrest adds to growing scrutiny over past allegations involving British troops, including the 2012 murder of Agnes Wanjiru, a Kenyan woman allegedly killed by a British soldier. Her case remains unresolved, fuelling calls for justice and accountability.

The UK military conducts regular training in Kenya under a bilateral agreement that allows up to 6,000 troops annually.
