First Lady Rachel Ruto has launched a new project dubbed “Mama Kitchen Gardens.” The new project aims to provide fresh vegetables to State House and the nearby schools for free. The new project also encourages individuals to grow vegetables in school and at home. This project is also focused on improving nutrition and food security across the country.

The First Lady communicated in a post on Friday that, “The kitchen garden pilot at State House Nairobi will provide vegetables at no cost to State House employees living in the staff quarters, as well as support the neighboring public schools”,

Families, schools and all staff living in State House quarters are encouraged to take part in the project. Choosing to grow their own food will help them reduce reliance on expensive market produce. It will also ensure access to fresh ,leafy and healthy vegetables.

The Mama Kitchen Gardens project is promoting urban farming as well. Urban farming is important in towns with limited land for farming. Small spaces like balconies and backyards can be used to grow crops like kales and spinach. State House staff are among the first people to benefit from this project. They are encouraged to start their own kitchen gardens. This will help them save money in food and ensure their families enjoy fresh farm produce.

Schools have been encouraged to join the project as well. Starting their own kitchen gardens will help them learn how to grow food. This project also supports environmental sustainability. Growing food locally reduces the need for transportation. This therefore lowers pollution and waste.

This initiative aims to empower women since they take care of their households. By growing their own food, they can provide for their families. This initiative plays a huge role in supporting the country’s National food security plan.

The “Mama Kitchen Gardens” project is an important step toward a healthier and more self-sufficient future for Kenya.
