Two police officers stationed at Muthinga Police Post in Nyeri County are in custody following allegations of confiscating and hiding two kilograms of bhang without filing an official report, alongside claims of demanding a bribe.
According to police authorities, the officers—a male and a female—allegedly arrested a woman on April 15 and seized a bag suspected to contain narcotics.
The woman later claimed that the duo demanded a bribe of Sh100,000 for her release, which she reportedly paid. However, the drugs were never officially booked at the station, nor was the case recorded in the Occurrence Book as required.
The incident came to light after the woman, frustrated and angered by the ordeal, reported the matter to a local politician. The politician organized a protest to demand justice, prompting police commanders in Tetu to launch an internal investigation.
During a search conducted at the officers’ residences, a bag containing a substance believed to be bhang—approximately two kilograms—was recovered at the policewoman’s house. Further investigations revealed that the male officer was the one who allegedly received the bribe.
Authorities confirmed that the case was never reported to the station commander and described the conduct as unlawful and against police procedures.
“This is an isolated incident. We take such allegations seriously and are committed to rooting out rogue elements within the service,” said a senior police official who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the case.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has since launched a probe to establish the full extent of the incident and whether other officers were involved.
