Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after being convicted in the KSh 588 million corruption case.

To escape the jail term, Waititu will have to part with KSh 53.5 million fine.

His wife, Susan Wangari, who was also convicted in the graft case, was handed a one-year jail term with an option of paying KSh 500,000 fine.

The sentencing comes after the duo appeared before Chief Magistrate Thomas Nzioki of the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court to face charges related to, among others, abuse of office, conflict of interest and fraudulent procurement.

A probe by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) indicated that a company owned by Waititu’s family traded with the Kiambu county government during his tenure to fraudulently get tenders.

The company was irregularly awarded KSh KSh 588,198,328 contract for the conversion of several gravel roads in the sub-counties of Thika, Limuru, Gatundu North, Juja, and Ruiru to bituminous standards.

Waititu and his wife were charged alongside 12 other suspects who served under him during his governorship.
