The government has put employers on notice over delays in remitting monthly Social Health Authority (SHA) contributions, warning that late payments will attract penalties.
In a statement issued on Friday, September 5, SHA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mercy Mwangangi reminded employers that the deadline for submitting deductions is the 9th of every month.
She stressed that timely remittance is critical to guarantee uninterrupted health coverage for employees.
“SHA premiums are due by the 9th of every month. To ensure uninterrupted health coverage for your employees, please submit their premiums on time,” said Dr. Mwangangi.
She cautioned that employers who miss the deadline will face a 2 percent penalty on all unpaid amounts.
The surcharge will take effect automatically at midnight on September 9.
In addition to the financial penalty, those who fail to comply risk losing access to healthcare services under the scheme until all outstanding payments are cleared.
“A 2 per cent penalty will apply to all unpaid premiums as of midnight on the 9th. Make timely payments to avoid penalties and secure your employees’ health coverage,” Dr. Mwangangi added.
Kenyans struggling with the remittance process have been advised to reach the Authority through its toll-free line 147 or email helpdesk@dha.go.ke for assistance.
This directive comes just two months after the government rolled out the Lipa SHA Pole Pole initiative, which allows Kenyans in the informal sector to pay their premiums in flexible instalments.
President William Ruto unveiled the programme on June 1 during the Madaraka Day celebrations, describing it as a step towards ensuring all Kenyans can access healthcare without financial strain.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale echoed the President’s remarks, calling the initiative a milestone in the journey towards Universal Health Coverage.
“This is a significant milestone in our journey towards Universal Health Coverage. We are strengthening our promise to deliver healthcare that is accessible, flexible, and inclusive,” said CS Duale.
