Freelance photographer Jackton Odhiambo, who was convicted of killing LGBTQ activist Edwin Chiloba, has been sentenced to 50 years in prison.

In his ruling on Monday, December 16, Eldoret High Court’s Justice Reuben Nyakundi described Chiloba’s murder as premeditated and carried out with malice in disregard of the sanctity of life.

“This was a well-planned, malicious act that showed no respect for the sanctity of life. Such crimes must face the full weight of the law,” Nyakundi said.

Nyakundi also took into account the suffering Chiloba’s family endured following his murder, noting that it marked the end of a lineage since he was their only son.

The judge also noted the horrific nature of the crime, revealing that Chiloba was sodomised before his murder.

Chiloba, also a fashionista, was murdered on the 2023 New Year’s Eve and Odhiambo, his roommate and suspected lover, was later arrested as the main suspect in the killing.
