The Ministry of Health has stepped up preparations for the inaugural Kenya Health Summit 2026, with the government set to use the two-day forum to review progress made in transforming the country’s healthcare system.
The summit is scheduled for August 18 and 19 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) under the theme “Reforms Delivered, Health as a Right.”
The Ministry of Health, led by Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, engaged media representatives ahead of the summit to highlight key developments in the health sector and the reforms being implemented under the government’s Universal Health Coverage agenda.
A key focus of the discussions was the Taifa Care Model, through which the government is seeking to expand access to healthcare regardless of a person’s income, location or circumstances.
More than 31.2 million Kenyans have so far registered with the Social Health Authority (SHA), according to the Ministry.
The SHA has processed close to 7.9 million claims and paid approximately KSh164 billion.
The government is also using the Primary Healthcare Fund to support access to services at Level 2, 3 and 4 health facilities, with registered Kenyans able to receive covered services without payment at the point of care.
At the community level, more than 107,000 Community Health Promoters are providing preventive, promotive and basic healthcare services through 277 Primary Care Networks.
The government is also investing in local pharmaceutical manufacturing, essential medicines, medical equipment and health infrastructure as part of efforts to strengthen the health system.
