The Head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy Dennis Itumbi sharply disagreed with Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji over the regulation of social media and the reported cases of abductions.

Mukunji had called out the government over the handling of young people using social media platforms to express themselves, sensationally claiming it had a hand in those who had been reported missing.

The MP, in turn, issued an ultimatum to the government to produce Billy Mwangi, one of the missing social media users. He had earlier in the day led Embu residents in a demonstration demanding Mwangi’s release.

However, Itumbi asked Mukunji to stop giving ultimatums to the government he is part of having been elected on the UDA ticket.

Instead, Itumbi asked Mukunji to focus on devising constructive solutions to emerging issues such as abductions.

The digital strategist told the MP that demonstrations will not lead to the proper use of social media, challenging him to use his position as a lawmaker to come up with laws such as self-regulation that will empower the creatives.

"Maandamano is not going to deliver responsible social media use, create a self-regulation body in parliament. Empower the creatives that way, the rest is just politics," Itumbi told Mukunji.

Itumbi further asked the youth to avoid using social media platforms for negative purposes.

Addressing the issue of abductions, Itumbi said the matter was being investigated by relevant authorities, calling for patience.
