The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed that the June 25 Gen Z-led protests were infiltrated by criminal elements, leading to deadly chaos, looting, and destruction across multiple counties.
In a press briefingheld on Monday evening, DCI boss Mohamed Amin revealed that while many Kenyans turned out peacefully, a well-orchestrated group hijacked the demonstrations, resulting in loss of lives, serious injuries to at least 11 officers, and widespread destruction of property. “Criminals came out to hijack demonstrations, these criminals had clear intention; to cause chaos, loot, destroy lives and property, with clear coordinated agenda to forcefully enter lawfully protected areas and destroy government installations,” he stated
According to Amin, intelligence and arrest records reveal that some individuals with specific instructions to attack public institutions and security installations such as Kikuyu Law Court, and multiple police stations, were ferried in unmarked vehicles from particular areas.
Firearms and police equipment were stolen during these attacks, some of these weapons were used in violent robberies last night within Naivasha police station area.
Several retail and wholesale outlets within Nairobi CBD, Kitengela, Dagoretti, Naivasha, and Nyeri among others were looted and vandalized. ATMs were broken into, and millions of shillings stolen in the midst of the chaos.
The DCI Boss call upon all the victims of the thuggery, those whose shops were looted and properties destroyed, who are yet to report to come forward and report to the police station so that they can assist with investigations. To the families who lost their loved ones, the injured, we stand with you, said Amin
