The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has revealed major breakthroughs in the investigation into the fatal shooting of former African Institute of Mental and Brain Health Director, Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, linking the murder to a long-standing land dispute and implicating rogue police officers.
Addressing the media, the DCI said the July 29, 2026 killing was a meticulously planned assassination executed by an organised team. Dr. Mutiso was travelling in an Uber from Tanga Heights Apartments along Riara Road to her workplace in Upper Hill when gunmen ambushed the vehicle after two Toyota Prado vehicles blocked the road. She sustained three gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at Kenyatta National Hospital.
Investigators said intelligence-led operations, forensic analysis and CCTV footage identified Daniel Mwangi Njoroge as the coordinator of the operation and Kelvin Ngugi Kinuthia as the motorcycle rider who ferried the shooter to the scene. The motorcycle used in the attack has since been impounded.
The DCI further disclosed that serving police officers were involved in the murder. Police Constable Elijah Kibelion Kimoi of Karinde Police Post has been arrested and identified as the alleged gunman, while Inspector Kenneth Kipkemboi Sang, Officer Commanding Nderi Police Post, and PC Bett Kiplangat Collins remain at large.
Investigators recovered a Mini Jericho pistol issued to Sang from the Nderi Police Post armoury. Ballistic tests confirmed the firearm matched spent cartridges recovered at the crime scene and the bullet removed from Dr. Mutiso’s body during post-mortem.
According to the DCI, investigations indicate the murder was motivated by a land dispute involving property in Mlolongo. Rose Mbithe Mulwa and her son, Christopher Mulwa, have been identified as the alleged organisers and financiers of the conspiracy and remain in custody as investigations continue.
The DCI said it is pursuing additional suspects, including those linked to the 2025 drive-by shooting of lawyer Kyalo Mbobu, vowing that everyone involved in Dr. Mutiso’s murder will be brought to justice.
