Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has invited public servants from various national government departments to go beyond the expected by extensively communicating the ongoing development initiatives as the Kenya Kwanza government is moving fast to deliver its Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
During a meeting with the national government officers from Siaya County, Wandayi was worried that President William Ruto’s administration’s projects were not being publicized enough, especially in the greater Nyanza region.
He pointed out that while there were numerous infrastructure, energy, and social sectors flagship projects, as well as other modules at different stages of completion, many people remained unaware of them.
Wandayi argued that communication should not only be a requirement for accountability, but also for making sure that communities understand and appreciate government efforts to create livelihood opportunities.
“As public servants, you are the government’s first point of contact on the ground. Informing citizens about development programmes being implemented in their areas is your responsibility,” he said.
The CS also noted that the Nyanza region is experiencing a major political change after the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. He explained that the country is preparing for the 2027 General Election and therefore it is crucial to provide clear guidance on the government’s agenda to promote informed political engagement.
Wandayi advised officials to collaborate closely with local leaders and citizens in order to bridge the information gap. He also believed that open communication would help free the community from misinformation and thus, increase their confidence in the government programmes.
The meeting is a reflection of a country-wide ministry of energy initiative aimed at reviewing the progress of various projects and deepening the partnership between national government representatives and the local communities.
