Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has confirmed that a male trader who sustained a gunshot wound to the head during Tuesday’s anti-government protests in Nairobi’s Central Business District remains in critical condition.
The patient, referred to the facility at 3:16 p.m. on June 17, arrived at the Accident and Emergency Department in critical condition, suffering from a severe brain injury and heavy bleeding. He was stabilised and placed on life support by a team led by emergency physician Dr. Janet Sugut.
A CT scan confirmed that the bullet had penetrated the left side of the skull.
"He was taken into surgery at 8:50 p.m. for a complex procedure led by Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr. Sam Njiru. The bullet was successfully removed after a two-hour operation. The patient is now in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on mechanical ventilation and under 24-hour monitoring," said William Sigilal The acting Chief Executive Officer at Kenyatta National Hospital.
KNH also reported receiving 16 protest-related casualties. Of these, seven were admitted for further treatment, nine were treated and discharged, and two have already undergone surgery. Four more are scheduled for operations today.
One patient remains unidentified after suffering a skull fracture believed to be caused by assault.
Acting KNH CEO Dr. William Sigilal praised first responders and the public for their swift action in ensuring timely medical attention and commended the hospital’s emergency teams for their dedication under pressure.
