Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale today officially inaugurated the Independent Investigative Committee on Tissue and Organ Transplant Services, a move aimed at addressing mounting public concern over alleged malpractices within the country’s transplant sector.

The launch, held at Afya House in Nairobi, follows the issuance of Gazette Notice No. 78 dated 23rd April 2025. The committee, led by renowned researcher and bioethicist Prof. Elizabeth Bukusi, has been tasked with probing claims of unethical conduct and medical negligence particularly involving the Mediheal Group of Hospitals.

“This is a moment of reckoning,” said Hon. Duale. “We are not just conducting an investigation—we are restoring public trust in the health system. We will not tolerate impunity or protect any wrongdoing.”

The CS emphasized the need for integrity, discretion, and professionalism as the committee embarks on what he described as a “critical national assignment.”

The committee’s mandate includes auditing transplant procedures, reviewing regulatory compliance, and recommending reforms to safeguard the dignity and rights of patients.

Medical Services Principal Secretary Dr. Ouma Oluga urged the committee to deliver an impartial and evidence-based report that could guide long-term improvements in organ transplant services across the country.

The committee is expected to submit its findings and recommendations by 22nd July 2025. “We will act decisively, transparently, and in the best interest of the people of Kenya,” Duale affirmed.

Also present at the inauguration were Ms. Mary Muthoni, PS Public Health and Professional Standards, and Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, both of whom echoed the ministry’s commitment to accountability and reform within the healthcare system.

The formation of the committee marks a significant step in the government’s broader effort to ensure ethical medical practices and enhance public confidence in Kenya’s health sector.
