The government’s efforts to unlock the economic potential of the Lake Victoria region have received a boost, with the Sindo ESP Market in Suba South Constituency nearing completion.

According to Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Dr. Raymond Omollo, the project is now approximately 85 per cent complete and is expected to become a key pillar of President William Ruto’s Blue Economy agenda.

“By enhancing market access and providing value-addition facilities, it aims to directly benefit fisher folk and small traders, strengthening local economic activity,” he saiod in a statement.

The market, being implemented by the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, is designed to support fishing communities and small-scale traders by providing modern infrastructure that promotes trade and value addition.

Once operational, the two-storey facility will accommodate more than 400 traders and provide dedicated spaces for fish storage, processing and marketing, helping maximize returns from Lake Victoria’s fisheries resources.

Dr. Omollo said the project demonstrates the government’s commitment to investing in infrastructure that directly improves livelihoods while creating opportunities for economic growth in rural communities.

The market will also feature cold storage facilities, an ICT hub, administrative offices, a social hall, kitchen facilities and modern sanitation amenities, positioning it as a comprehensive business and community centre.

Officials believe the facility will enhance the competitiveness of local traders, reduce post-harvest losses and stimulate economic activity across the wider Suba South area.

The project forms part of a broader government strategy to strengthen the Blue Economy sector through investments in markets, fish landing sites, transport infrastructure and value-addition facilities across the Lake Region.
