The East African Community (EAC) Bureau of Speakers on Tuesday paid a courtesy call to Uganda’s top military officer, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, with discussions centred on cross-border cooperation and security on Lake Victoria.

During the closed-door meeting, the delegation raised concerns over incidents of harassment involving Kenyan fishermen by Ugandan lake security forces.

The speakers underscored the need for equitable access to shared resources on Lake Victoria, describing the water body as an important economic lifeline for communities across the region.

General Muhoozi acknowledged the complaints and proposed joint efforts between Kenya and Uganda to develop a coordinated security framework for the lake. He said a harmonised approach would help protect the lake’s ecosystem, environment and shared economic interests.

Both sides also commended the ongoing EAC Parliamentary Games, describing them as an important platform for fostering unity and cooperation among citizens of the region beyond formal diplomacy.
