The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has dismissed claims that it has cleared Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat over the death of Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody on June 8, 2025.

In a statement released on Monday, IPOA chairman Ahmed Issack Hassan clarified that the case is still under investigation and that no one has been cleared as yet.

He added that although certain suspects are already arraigned in court, Lagat is still under active investigation.

"The allegations that the authority has exonerated Lagat are malicious. If the probes conclude that he is in the wrong, IPOA will make appropriate recommendations to discipline him," Hassan said.

However, as previously reported, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja said an investigation carried out by IPOA found Lagat not culpable in Ojwang’s killing and was to resume duty today, Monday, July 14.

The DIG had stepped aside to allow investigation into the murder.
