Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Hassan Ali Joho on Thursday presided over the unveiling of Tunga Nutrition (K) Limited’s new fish feeds production line in Nairobi, describing the investment as a major boost to Kenya’s aquaculture sector.

The facility, a joint venture between Unga Group and global animal nutrition firm Nutreco, is expected to significantly lower the cost of fish feed while increasing local production capacity — two factors industry players have long cited as key challenges facing fish farmers.

Speaking during the ceremony, Joho said the new production line marks an important step in efforts to transform aquaculture into a more competitive and sustainable industry.

“This ground-breaking joint venture between Unga and Nutreco marks a major milestone in our quest to revolutionize the aquaculture industry,” he said.

He noted that high feed costs have historically constrained growth in fish farming, affecting profitability for small- and medium-scale farmers. By expanding local manufacturing, the plant is expected to ease pressure on farmers while improving supply reliability.

“By significantly reducing fish feed costs and boosting local production, this initiative promises to empower our farmers and strengthen food security,” Joho added.

The CS said the development aligns with the government’s broader strategy to rejuvenate aquaculture, which now contributes nearly 25 per cent of Kenya’s total fish production. He emphasized that strengthening the value chain — from feed production to market access — remains central to unlocking the sector’s full potential.

Joho congratulated Tunga Nutrition on the investment, saying it signals growing private sector confidence in Kenya’s blue economy.

“This new production line promises better opportunities for farmers and stronger food systems,” he said.

The launch comes as the government steps up efforts to expand aquaculture production, reduce reliance on fish imports and create jobs along the fisheries value chain.
