Saba Saba Spirit Lives On in Gen Z, Says Kalonzo
Wiper leader, Kalonzo Musyoka

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has marked the 35th anniversary of Saba Saba Day by drawing powerful parallels between Kenya’s historic struggle for multiparty democracy and the current wave of youth-led protests rocking the nation.

In a statement shared on his social media platforms on Sunday, Kalonzo said the spirit of resistance seen in 1990 is alive again this time in the hands of a younger generation demanding accountability, justice, and dignity from those in power.

“Today the voice of resistance is found in our youth, they use their phones to air, tweet, and record their grievances and carry the flag of Kenya to show the world how proud they are to be Kenyan.” Kalonzo stated.

He referred to the Gen Z protestors as the faces and voices of Kenya’s “Third Liberation,” he praised their boldness and nonviolent tactics in challenging the current administration.

The Wiper leader also criticized the Kenya Kwanza government, he accused it of misrule and ignoring the cries of young people.

Back then, Kenyans protested against an oppresive single-party government. Kalonzo recalled and praised the bravery of leaders like Kenneth Matiba, and Martin Shikuku and Charles Rubia whose defiance led to the nullify of Section 2A and opened the door for multiparty politics.

“Its now Gen Z’s turn to fight for a better country, this generational awakening sweeping across our beloved motherland,” Kalonzo said.

As Kenya reflects on what happened in the past and the demands of what they want in present, Kalonzo’s words echo a growing sentiment that the struggle for a fair, transparent, and inclusive Kenya is far from over and that the youth may well be leading the next chapter.
