The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed its regret following the United States’ decision to withdraw from the global health body. On January 20, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the country’s plan to end its membership with WHO, sparking concerns over the future of international health collaboration.

In a statement released on January 21, 2025, WHO emphasized the United States’ important role as a founding member since 1948. The organization highlighted the significant contributions the U.S. has made over the years, from helping eradicate smallpox to bringing polio to the brink of eradication. WHO also acknowledged the tremendous impact of American institutions in shaping and supporting the organization’s work.

“Together, we ended smallpox and brought polio to the brink of eradication. American institutions have contributed to and benefited from WHO membership,” WHO’s statement read. The organization further underscored the importance of U.S. participation in recent reforms, which have transformed WHO into a more accountable and cost-effective entity. These changes represent the largest overhaul in the organization’s history, aimed at strengthening its ability to address global health challenges.

WHO also expressed hope that the U.S. would reconsider its decision. “We hope the United States will reconsider and look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to maintain the partnership between the USA and WHO,” the statement continued. WHO emphasized that continued collaboration between the two would be critical to safeguarding the health and well-being of millions of people worldwide.

As the lead global health agency, WHO plays a vital role in combating disease outbreaks, strengthening health systems, and ensuring the protection of public health globally. The organization remains committed to addressing the root causes of diseases and responding to health emergencies across the globe.
