Azimio leader Raila Odinga has announced that he is stepping away from active participation in Kenyan politics to focus on his bid for the position of African Union Commission (AUC) chairman.
In a statement made on Wednesday, Raila Odinga revealed that his political efforts will now be concentrated on the continental stage, specifically his campaign for the AUC chairmanship, with elections set for February 2025.
“My time for active involvement in Kenyan politics has come to an end,” Raila said. “I am transitioning to work for the continent. My primary focus will now be on the AUC campaigns.”

Raila’s comments came after a meeting with Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi at his Railways headquarters office. He expressed his commitment to advancing the African vision of prosperity, peace, unity, and stability.
“The African Union Commission needs strengthening to help African countries realize the dreams of our Founding Fathers—a united and prosperous continent,” Raila said. “We must strive for a united, peaceful, and prosperous Africa where citizens can live freely and work productively.”
Raila highlighted the ongoing challenges facing the continent, including healthcare, education, wealth creation, and employment. He also addressed the tragic issue of African youth risking their lives to reach Europe in search of better opportunities.
“Many young Africans are dying in the Mediterranean as they flee poverty and challenges at home,” Raila noted. “This should not be the case if we create a conducive environment for them to find employment and opportunities within Africa.”
In July, Kenya formally endorsed Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the AUC chairmanship. President William Ruto is scheduled to officially launch Raila’s bid next week.
Mudavadi urged Kenyans to support Raila’s continental ambitions, highlighting that Raila represents Kenya’s values and aspirations on the global stage.
“Next week, on August 27, 2024, President William Ruto will formally launch Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the AUC chairmanship,” Mudavadi said. “As Raila steps forward, let us unite behind him—not just as a government, but as a unified people. We appreciate the President’s support for Raila’s candidacy and his commitment to our shared values.”
