A woman who has been wanted by detectives since last year has been arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) with cocaine worth an estimated KSh13.5 million.
The woman was intercepted on Friday, September 25, as she prepared to board a flight to Bangladesh.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the arrest resulted from the stop order given by detectives from the National Anti-Narcotics Investigations Bureau (NANIB) over allegations of drug trafficking.
According to reports, detectives from the Kenya Airports Criminal Investigations (KACI) intercepted the woman and searched her luggage.
The search revealed three small packages which upon testing revealed that the package contained cocaine.
The packages had a total weight of 3,383 grammes and were worth KSh13,530,720.
According to the DCI, the suspect had been under the law enforcement radar for one year now due to allegations of narcotics trafficking.
The woman was taken to JKIA Police Station while the detectives continued investigating the allegations of drug trafficking.
Authorities are now pursuing more leads as they seek to establish the source of the drugs and whether other people were involved.
KACI Director B. Kanyai said the airport investigations unit was working with other law enforcement agencies to prevent Kenyan airports from being used to facilitate the illegal drug trade.
She warned that individuals attempting to use the country’s airports to traffic narcotics would face legal action.
