Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has proposed the annulment of the voter’s card requirement in the electoral process in Kenya.

This, Raila, while speaking to NTV on Sunday, July 20, said, will simplify the electoral process and cut costs while at it.

The ODM leader said the national identity should be the only requisite item during the election, terming the voter’s card an inessential expense.

"There is no reason why you should be having a voter's card and you have an ID. People should vote with their IDs. Just give people IDs because there are places where people don't have IDs, and that is why the voter register is skewed," said Raila.

Raila also proposed the staggering of the elections rather than holding six races—presidential, gubernatorial, senatorial, MP, Woman Rep, and MCA—on a single day.

The ODM chief said having people vote on the different categories would simplify and cheapen the electoral process.

“The way we conduct elections creates confusion and drives up costs. It’s time for a radical rethink,” he added.
