Former President Uhuru Kenyatta stirred a storm during the Jubilee Party NDC after accusing President William Ruto of supposedly eroding the gains made during the Jubilee administration.
In particular, Uhuru pointed out his Linda Mama programme, which was replaced by President Ruto’s Linda Jamii. The former president trashed Linda Jamii, describing it as untried and untested.
TUKIO.co.ke’s independent writer looks at how the two schemes compare and which one benefits expectant women more.
First, whereas Linda Jamii provides comprehensive household maternity care, including the mother, newborn baby, spouse, and children, Uhuru’s Linda Mama covered the mother only.
Unlike Linda Mama, Linda Jamii covers all health complications ensuing from the delivery for the mother and baby.
Linda Jamii covers ante-natal, delivery, and post-natal services. Linda Mama only paid for delivery.
While Linda Jamii covers care in ICU and HDU for mothers and their newborns, Linda Mama only covered the ordinary ward.
Further, Linda Jamii pays substantially higher rates reflecting the true cost of quality healthcare, with normal delivery at KSh 10,000, which is double what Linda Mama used to offer. In Level 6 hospitals, the rate goes up to KSh 30,000.
For caesarian sections, Linda Jamii pays KSh 34,200 and a 3-day hospital stay, which is nearly double Linda Mama’s KSh 17,500.
