The Ministry of Health has announced a critical shortage of child vaccines, with 12 out of 47 counties currently out of stock.
The vaccines most affected are BCG (tuberculosis) and polio, each with only two weeks’ supply left, and Rotavirus with one month’s supply remaining.
According to a statement by Principal Secretary Ouma Oluga, the shortage is mainly due to global vaccine supply bottlenecks, which have disrupted deliveries across several countries.
In response, the government is clearing 3.2 million doses of polio vaccine for distribution by June 10 and expects 3 million doses of BCG vaccine for distribution by June 15.
Additionally, a strategic vaccine reserve will be established in all 47 counties.
The ministry assures the public that no child will miss a vaccine dose, thanks to ongoing catch-up mechanisms and redistribution efforts.
