Microsoft has announced that it will discontinue its calling and messaging platform, Skype, in May 2025, marking an end to its over 20 years of operation.

By shutting down Skype, Microsoft aims to shift focus to its modern communication platform, Microsoft Teams Free.

In a communication via X, the company asked Skype users to sign in to Microsoft Teams Free with their Skype accounts to stay connected.

"Starting in May 2025, Skype will no longer be available. Over the coming days, you can sign in to Microsoft Teams Free with your Skype account to stay connected with all your chats and contacts. Thank you for being part of Skype," said Microsoft.

Jeff Teper, the President of Collaborative Apps and Platforms at Microsoft, said discontinuing Skype aims to streamline the company’s consumer communication services and enhance user experience through a more robust and feature-rich platform, Teams.

With Teams, Teper said users have access to many of the same core features they use in Skype, such as one-on-one calls and group calls, messaging, and file sharing.

He added that Teams offers enhanced features like hosting meetings, managing calendars, and building and joining communities for free.
