The Speaker of National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula has defended President William Ruto’s dedication to the Western Kenya region. He said the government has continued to back the region through appointments and huge development initiatives despite the region not voting President majority during the 2022 General Election.

Wetang’ula, who was addressing a church service at St. Francis Miyanga Catholic Church in Bumula Constituency, Bungoma County, refuted the opposition leaders’ claims that President Ruto reneged on the 2022 political agreement.

Wetang’ula stated that appointing Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, himself as Speaker of the National Assembly, Cabinet Secretaries, eight Principal Secretaries, and other leaders mainly from Western Kenya are indicative of the President’s trust in the region and the commitment to the inclusive governance of the country.

He added that the appointments constitute a clear signal from the government that not only is the region recognized for its contribution to national development but also a major player in the leadership of the country.

The Speaker also pointed out the several developmental initiatives in Western Kenya that include the resuscitation of government abandoned road projects, the takeover of Matulo Airstrip and the coming Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) station at Miyanga Township.

Wetang’ula said the new infrastructure projects wouldn’t only increase regional trade but also generate employment and enhance transport linkages throughout the region.

According to Wetangula, the government’s development strategy is aimed at all Kenyans irrespective of how they voted, and the continued investment in Western Kenya is a clear indication that President Ruto is serious about the region.
