Detectives have arrested a wanted murder suspect linked to the killing of a teacher in Kirinyaga County after a months-long manhunt spanning multiple counties.

The suspect, identified as Peter Kanumbi, was apprehended in Mpeketoni, Lamu County, following a coordinated operation involving detectives from Lamu County and officers from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) based in Kerugoya.

Kanumbi had been on the run since March 12, 2026, after the murder of Betty Wanjiru Nyaga in Mwea East, Kirinyaga County. Investigators launched extensive intelligence-led operations to track him down after he allegedly disappeared following the incident.

According to detectives, the suspect had been hiding in Lamu County and was arrested moments before he could allegedly escape across the border into neighbouring Somalia in an attempt to evade capture.

The arrest brought to an end what investigators described as a prolonged cat-and-mouse chase between the suspect and law enforcement agencies.
Following the operation, Kanumbi was escorted back to Kirinyaga County and arraigned before the Kerugoya Law Courts.

Detectives successfully obtained a five-day custodial order to allow them to complete investigations into the murder case as preparations for further legal proceedings continue.
