Safina Party Leader Jimi Wanjigi has unveiled an ambitious plan to overhaul Kenya’s governance structure should he be elected president in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a morning breakfast talk show on Radio Generation, the businessman and political strategist, who has been a consistent critic of President William Ruto’s administration, said his government would focus on transformative policies aimed at ending poverty and restoring accountability in public service.
Wanjigi emphasized that the government’s role should be distinct from that of the private sector, arguing that certain responsibilities—such as protecting the nation from economic and external aggression—must remain under state control.
“Government should focus on what the private sector cannot do. The private sector cannot protect us from external aggression,” he stated.
He also proposed sweeping reforms in Kenya’s policing system, including replacing the offices of Officers Commanding Police Divisions (OCPDs) with elected sheriffs, similar to the American system.
“We need a police force that helps us live civilly according to the laws that exist. We are proposing to change the title of OCPD to sheriff, elected by the people—either a civilian or a police officer,” Wanjigi explained.
