KNCHR Gives Protest Victims 21 Days to File Compensation Claims

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has given Kenyans who were injured or have property that was damaged during the 2017, 2024, and 2025 protests 21 days to come forward and claim compensation.

In their Monday release, KNCHR requested that those who feel they should be compensated attach evidence to their claims to support their cause.

The move, according to KNCHR Chairperson Claris Ogangah, is to verify the victims and come up with the final list of those eligible to be compensated.

“We’re giving the public 21 days to come forward so we can confirm their information and include them in our victims’ roster.”

The commission has partnered with a 10-point implementation committee to come up with a clear plan of action to show how the compensation will be carried out.

The Head of Public Service recently gazetted a team to work with KNCHR to oversee the compensation of the victims once the plan is in place.

The government has also allocated about KSh2 billion in the supplementary budget to compensate the victims of the protests, pending approval by Parliament.

If the funds proved to be insufficient, the team can seek additional funds in the 2026/2027 budget.

The announcement by KNCHR came as President William Ruto gave the commission 60 days to come up with the guiding framework to be presented to the government by June 2026.

The President gave the order during a joint parliamentary group of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

The compensation of protest victims was part of the 10-point agreement between the two parties after the 2024 protests, which preceded the making of the broader government.

The President also noted that the government has already begun the process of identifying and profiling victims of the protests that have been going on since 2017.
