Venus Williams isn’t quite ready to call it quits on her iconic career. The seven-time Grand Slam champion, who recently attended the 2025 Miami Open as a spectator, suggested that stepping back onto the court as a competitor is still a possibility.
“Watching these matches is incredibly inspiring,” Venus shared in a video recap of her time at the tournament. “I’ve loved every part of this journey. People keep asking if I’m playing again, and when I say no, the next question is always, ‘When are you coming back?’”
At 44, she is embracing a more flexible approach to her career, a stark contrast to the structured schedules she followed for decades. “Athletes always have a plan—what tournaments to play, how to train, when to peak. Now, I just play because I love it. Every day, I’m on the court, and if I feel ready, who knows?”
With a smile, Venus joked about the assumption that she retired alongside her younger sister. “Serena ruined it for me! The moment she stepped away, everyone thought I did too.”
As for her eventual retirement, Venus is certain she’ll leave the sport with no regrets. “I always thought I’d be emotional when I retired, but I know now that I won’t cry. I’ve given everything to tennis, and more than anything, I’ll just feel grateful.”
