Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga is on the receiving end over his insensitive remarks, seemingly mocking and celebrating the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Speaking during a burial ceremony in Nyeri, Kahiga, while speaking in his native Kikuyu language, insinuated that Raila’s death was God’s plan to stop the Nyanza region from benefiting from President William Ruto’s government goodies, resources that will now be channelled back to Central Kenya.
The governor regretted that President Ruto’s working arrangement with Raila had diverted resources to Nyanza and his death had levelled the playing field, which will now force the president back to the drawing board ahead of the 2027 polls.
"The plan that had been hatched, if you look keenly, all the goodies were being directed there because of tomorrow’s plans. It seemed like they did away with us, but God came and brought this thing. So now people have been told to go back to the drawing board because the plan that was there was probably to throw us out. But who is God. He saw up their people in heaven are disagreeing a lot and came for Baba so that he can go and smoothen things up there," Kahiga shamelessly said.
His remarks sparked uproar. Here are some comments sampled by TUKIO.co.ke.
MP Kaleb Amisi: "Lets call out such foolish leaders like Kahiga Mutahi. No kikuyu will hate a luo because of what you said and no luo will hate a kikuyu because of what you said. In short you are disgusting man. Tribal leaders are the source of our problems as a nation not citizens."
MP Oscar Sudi: "Governor Mutahi Kahiga, I've said this before and I'll say it again - why are you pushing one community against the wall when the country is yet to come to terms with the death of Baba Raila and stirring tribal tensions? Irresponsible and reckless statement from a leader. Shame on you!!"
Muthoni Njakwe: :"Mutahi Kahiga is being used badly, ati to bring division between us and our dear brothers from the Lake. You don’t need a degree in rocket science to know that was bound to happen. He should honestly be very ashamed."
Oketch Salah: "I strongly condemn the reckless and insensitive remarks by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga celebrating the passing of Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga. Such statements are not only shameful but also a deep insult to the Odinga family and to millions of Kenyans who hold Baba in high esteem for his lifelong struggle for democracy, justice and national unity."
