The government has begun the construction of the Makuyu ICT Hub in Muranga county, a facility that will put the internet at the disposal of the locals, equip youth with digital skills, and provide them with online work opportunities locally.
During the launch of the Jitume ICT Hub in Makuyu, Information, Communications and the Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo said that the facilities are aimed at expanding digital access and enhancing access to government services and opportunities.
The Jitume ICT Hubs is one of the governments digital transformation initiatives to provide technology and internet services access to all the 1, 450 wards in Kenya.
Kabogo stated that the digital hubs should improve internet access, be a place for digital skills training, and foster online job opportunities.
The Cabinet Secretary said the government is determined that the digital transformation agenda will reach every corner of the country, thus they are continuing with the expansion of fiber connectivity in rural areas.
It is anticipated that the Makuyu ICT hub will be completed in a just few months becoming one of the several facilities of this nature that are being extended all over the country as part of the strategy to make Kenya a leading digital economy hub in the region.
The Makuyu ICT Hub is also a phenomenal piece of the Governments overall digital transformation blueprint which among other things, focuses on empowering the youth with digital skills that are relevant to the world of work today, creating online job opportunities as well as nurturing innovation at the grassroots level.
“With this Hub, the youth of Makuyu and the surrounding areas will be able to access a high, speed internet, acquire digital skills, and have an attractive space to innovate, collaborate, and engage effectively in the digital economy.” Kabogo said
