Former Bungoma High School principal and UDA aspirant for the Malava parliamentary seat, Enock Andanje, has died.
Andanje passed away on Friday morning in Bungoma County after collapsing during a widows’ empowerment forum. The ceremony was chaired by Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.
Andanje fainted the moment he arrived at the function, according to reports. Officials say he developed complications when he alighted from his vehicle, and people around him rushed to his rescue immediately. Attempts to resuscitate him failed, even as he was rushed to hospital.
His death was confirmed by Prime Cabinet Secretary Mudavadi, who halted proceedings to announce the news.
“As we are sitting here, I have just received word that one of us, Enock Andanje, has died,” he told me.
The news was greeted in shock by guests, and some later returned to social media to pay tribute to the former school teacher and political hopeful.
Although the reason for death was still unknown, a post-mortem will be carried out shortly.
Andanje had retired from his role as Chief Principal to vie for the Malava parliamentary seat under the UDA ticket. The seat fell vacant following the death of former MP Malulu Injendi in February.
He had been actively participating in public functions within the constituency, including the forum where he collapsed.
His death comes just a week after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced that all by-elections, including the Malava seat, would be held on November 27.
The IEBC released the schedule through a gazette notice issued on Friday, August 8, listing all wards, constituencies, and counties with vacant elective positions.
