Former Sports Principal Secretary Ambassador Peter Kirimi Kaberia and five other individuals have been charged over the alleged misappropriation of KSh330 million allocated for preparations to host the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
The accused appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Isabella Barasa at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court for plea taking. The charges followed investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), after the Director of Public Prosecutions approved the prosecution.
The six include Kaberia, former Senior Principal Finance Officer Stephen Njoroge Muthuma, former Principal Accountant Enock Onditi Ondwari, former Senior Superintendent Engineer John Kiende Ruga, Taxwise Consulting Limited and Liroma Assurance Services Limited director Samuel Mbaa Njoroge, and Lease Pride Limited director Anthony Mwangi Kimanthi.
The wider case involves 16 accused persons and 17 counts, including abuse of office, unlawful acquisition of public property, procurement law violations, acquisition of proceeds of crime and financial misconduct.
Eight accused also face conspiracy to commit an economic crime.
All the accused denied the charges. The prosecution did not oppose their release on bond or bail.
Kaberia and several co-accused were granted KSh3 million bond or KSh1 million cash bail, while others received KSh2 million bond or KSh600,000 cash bail.
The court ordered all accused to surrender their passports within seven days. The case will be mentioned on September 15, 2026.
