The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has confirmed two tragic human-wildlife conflict incidents that claimed the lives of two individuals over the weekend.
In the first incident, a 14-year-old girl was attacked and killed by a lion on Saturday evening. The attack occurred within a ranch on the southern border of Nairobi National Park. The victim, a Grade 7 pupil at a local primary school, was reportedly in the area when the lion struck.
In a separate case, KWS reported that a 54-year-old man was fatally attacked by an elephant on Friday evening while grazing livestock in Mere Forest, Nyeri County. The man sustained severe chest injuries, fractured ribs, and internal trauma. He later died while undergoing treatment at Karatina Sub-county Hospital.
KWS has expressed its condolences to the families of the victims and pledged to intensify efforts to prevent further tragedies. “We are working closely with local law enforcement agencies and community leaders to enhance the safety of people living near protected wildlife areas,” read a statement from the agency.
The incidents have once again highlighted the ongoing challenge of human-wildlife conflict in areas bordering national parks and wildlife habitats, prompting renewed calls for stronger mitigation measures and community awareness programs.
