Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is demanding tougher penalties for arsonists to curb the rising wave of school fires.
In the past week, fires have been recorded in over 10 schools across the country, raising questions about whether the infernos were deliberately started as they mostly affected dormitories.
As a result, the teachers’ employer recommended severe consequences for those found guilty of arson, pushing for possible jail terms.
TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia asked headteachers and principals of the affected schools to take stern action and involve law enforcement agencies in investigating the arson incidents.
"Engage law enforcement agencies in investigating cases of arson and indiscipline in schools with a view to recommending administrative and legal action to the perpetrators," said Macharia.
TSC also directed all school heads and deputies to be present within school premises always to ensure learners’ safety.
Macharia warned of stern action if found defying guidelines.
