President William Ruto has directed schools to adopt “Kenya Beyond 2030” as the theme for creative events from next year, as the government seeks to use music, drama and other competitions to encourage young people to think about the country’s future.
The President also assigned Deputy President Kithure Kindiki to coordinate the establishment of the Kenya National Talent Search, a programme that will bring together the government and private sector in identifying and supporting young talent.
Ruto made the announcement on Friday, August 14, while speaking during the State Concert for the 98th Kenya Music Festival at Bungoma State Lodge.
He said the new talent search programme will run throughout the year and across the country, moving beyond the traditional school competition calendar.
“The Government, working with the private sector, will therefore establish the Kenya National Talent Search to identify talent and innovation in music, comedy, acting, poetry, film, dance, sport, and other fields throughout the year and in every part of Kenya,” Ruto said.
The President directed the State Department for Youth to begin implementing the programme in partnership with his Creative Economy Office and with support from the Sports Fund.
Schools to use new theme
Ruto said “Kenya Beyond 2030” would be the inaugural theme of the national talent search.
He also directed schools to adopt the theme in their creative events from next year.
This means students taking part in music, drama and other creative competitions will be encouraged to use their performances to explore issues around Kenya’s future and development.
The President said he expected to recognise winners of the first Kenya National Talent Search during the next Kalasha International Film and TV Awards.
The programme is expected to expand the search for talent beyond schools and give young people an opportunity to showcase their abilities in different parts of the country.
Science fair winners to visit State House
Ruto also announced a new recognition programme for young scientists and innovators.
He directed the Ministry of Education to start taking winners of the Kenya Science and Engineering Fair to State House from next year.
The President noted that the annual competition has been running since 1962, but its winners had not previously received formal recognition at State House.
He said recognising young innovators would send a message that their ideas and work are valued and can contribute to Kenya’s development.
The new measures place greater emphasis on talent, creativity and innovation alongside traditional academic achievement as the government seeks to give young Kenyans more opportunities to develop their abilities.
