President William Ruto on Thursday, February 6, held a phone conversation with the United States of America’s Secretary of State Marco Rubio with the Haiti mission taking center stage.
During the call, Rubio clarified that the USA has not withdrawn its support for the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission in Haiti as widely alleged earlier.
President Ruto and Rubio acknowledged the critical need to sustain momentum for the peacekeeping mission and its role in stabilising the Caribbean country and restoring order.
"I had a telephone conversation with the United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Our discussion confirmed that the United States has specifically exempted its support for the Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission in Haiti from the broader pause on federal assistance," President Ruto announced.
The two also reviewed bilateral relations between Kenya and the US and reaffirmed the two countries’ mutual commitment to strengthening their existing cooperation.
They also discussed regional peace and security in Africa, particularly the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), including the upcoming joint meeting between the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East African Community (EAC), scheduled for tomorrow and Saturday in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
