A bus transporting Tanzanian Members of Parliament to the 14th edition of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Games in Mombasa was involved in a collision with a lorry this afternoon in the Mbande area, Dodoma.
Kenya’s National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula confirmed that there were no fatalities in the accident.
He revealed that around 16 legislators sustained varying degrees of injury and were immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment.
“One bus carrying some of our colleagues from Tanzania was involved in an accident. We have no fatalities, but there are injuries,” Wetangula said.
He added that further details would be provided later.President William Ruto is set to officially open the games tomorrow at the Mama Ngina Waterfront in Mombasa.
The games, which will run until December 18, 2024, were established in 2009 through a resolution of the 4th East African Community (EAC) Bureau of Speakers.
The event is held annually on a rotational basis among East African Community partner states, aimed at strengthening relations between the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) and the parliaments of the region.
Parliaments from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, DR Congo, South Sudan, and Somalia are expected to participate in the games.
Venues for the event include Mbaraki Stadium (for athletics, soccer, and tug-of-war), Mombasa Sports Club (additional soccer matches), and the Aga Khan Academy (for indoor games)
